Piggy Glossary
It is important to mention that I am half “pig”. Well, the metaphoric, imaginary, theatrical side of me anyway! My mum suggested that I explain the piggy element of this site for those of you who do not yet speak the piggy language. There is a glossary of commonly used terms below. I LOVE it when piggies write email and grunt using The Blender Girl's piggy language.
Let me share some piggy history, so when you are reading my posts you don’t think I have thrown my brain in the blender!
I collect pigs. Chic, beautiful, funny little pigs from all over the world. My favourite is a pig made out of a coconut shell that I got in Hawaii on a trip with my family. It takes pride of place in my kitchen, and reminds me why we cook -- to make memories with loved ones. My friend Martin, a fellow foodie, and self professed overeater, asks one question when our group suggests branching out and sampling the offerings of a new restaurant: “is it snout worthy”? It always makes me laugh. Upon discovering another spectacular taste sensation, he proudly proclaims, “I believe we will be sticking our snouts back in THAT trough!”
Seeing as Martin is my official taster, and the ultimate litmus test for ensuring these gluten free vegetarian recipes will be accepted in the mainstream wheat and dairy inspired world, I thought it only fitting that I merge my love of pigs, and his, in this recipe blog. On this food site, being a “pig” is a positive thing. It is OK to overindulge. Especially once you embrace the fact that the best things in life really ARE free! Gluten Free, Sugar Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, Refined Sugar Free and Guilt Free!

A Pig
In the “Healthy Blender Recipe” world, a pig is defined as any self-respecting foodie and blender devotee. Pigs have unlocked the secret: that blended whole foods taste fantastic, and make life a lot easier! “Healthy Blender Pigs” share a common philosophy: “Blend and Live”. Pigs seize every opportunity to celebrate natural cooking and eating, green living, and “all things well blended”.
Angels Dancing On Your Tongue
A naughty little phrase affectionately adapted from a wine review in a former life. When mainstream, acceptable vocabulary fails to do a mind-blowing taste sensation justice, we pigs resort to this phrase. This is high praise from any healthy piggy!
Angels!
An abbreviated version of the above mentioned symptom of “piggy tourettes syndrome”.
Bland Blend
A blend that is missing that little something extra, and could use a bit of personality from the pig holding the blender! Be bold and give a taste idea a go in order to spice things up!
Blend and Live!
My mantra for life. Take what you like and leave the rest – in life, as well as in your cooking. Bring your piggy personality into the kitchen, and give a recipe your own personality. Find your perfect blend of ratios, flavours, dressings and seasonings. Blend up a treat; nourish yourself; and then go and have fun!
Blend and Taste
Is how healthy blender pigs like to cook – throw everything together and taste, keep tweaking and adding until we reach our perfect blend. The great thing about blender recipes, is that there is no "point of no return." Keep tasting and blending until you get it juuuuust right!
Blender Glitch
When things don’t go according to plan, and the piggy stars are not in alignment. We in the pig world are of the firm belief that there are very few troughs we could not happily snout in with the right decoration. Either dress it up with a little sweetener; some flavouring; blend in some extra flour, milk or water. Or dust yourself off, and chalk it up to piggy wisdom and experience; and get back into the trough tomorrow.
Blender Grunts
Lets you know how powerful your blender needs to be in order to achieve maximum success with a recipe. Most of the recipes on this site will work with any blender. But as we self respecting blender addicts are well aware – not all blenders are created equal. We recommend investing in “piggy heaven”, and purchasing a high-speed blender, such as a Vita Mix or BlendTec. But if your piggy bank doesn’t allow this yet, cuddle up to a pig with a high speed snout!
Blender Snouts
A rating system used on the healthy blender recipe site. Some places use stars. But we pigs proudly wiggle our snouts to let the world know how good we think something is!
Blendsational
A phrase commonly used in the healthy blender world to save time. Instead of a sensational blend, we just link our two favourite words together to describe a totally mind-blowing blend.
Congruntulations
Other animals say "Congratulations". Healthy Blender Pigs throw a bit more grunt in there to really support each other. Oink Oink =)
Cream Dreamer
Those pigs who are dangerously addicted to the pleasures of dairy, and find it difficult to open their minds to a vegan alternative.
Go the whole hog!
Feeling confident enough to exploit the full potential of a flavour, or piggy blend idea.
Happy as a Pig in Sh*t
A state of euphoria whilst indulging in the taste sensation of a fabulous blender treat. Pigs have been known to smear concoctions on their bodies, sing until all hours of the morning, wiggle their tails uncontrollably, and pledge their undying devotion to “all things blender” whilst under the elated influence of blended whole foods.
Hog Standard
As opposed to “bog standard” – a boring dish that is commonly served, but not up to the taste, or healthy standards of a self-respecting healthy blender pig.
Make a pig out of yourself
To enjoy and indulge (or overindulge as pigs are known to do) – stick your snout in the healthy blender trough without fear and guilt! YUM!
Pig Out
Indulge “to the max” in blended whole foods and share the love.
Pig Tail
Not to be confused with a pony tail. A healthy blender pig tail refers to the whole piggy being. We like to wiggle our tails when our souls are singing from the pleasures of healthy blended whole foods!
Piggilicious
Other animals say "delicious" but we pigs like to claim our delectable offerings and add a bit more grunt and passion into the exclamation.
Piggy Grunt
This is how healthy blender piggies communicate with each other on threads and posts. Commonly referred to on other blogs and forums as "comments".
Piggy Heaven
The ultimate state of bliss. A dip in the right blended trough can give “whole food believers” the keys to the “piggy pearly gates”.
Pigtastic
When "fantastic" just doesn't do a taste sensation justice, healthy blender pigs turn to one of their own lexicon for adjectives that will adequately describe what their snouts and tails are feeling.
s'blended
Similar to splendid - this is how healthy blender pigs declare that something is spectacularly well blended!
Snout
Refers to the nose, mouth, taste buds, tongue, and general whole being of a self respecting healthy blender pig.
Snout Deprived
A desperate state caused by the loss of a hog standard snouting pleasure or dreams of a toxic favourite.
Snout Pout
A sad state for a blender pig. The bottom of the snout turns down to reflect severe disappointment when an eagerly anticipated trough is found empty.
Snout Savers
Those last minute quick blends, or easily accessible ingredients that rescue a hungry pig in a moment of desperation, and save her from a quick dip in a toxic trough.
Snout worthy
Is a taste sensation worthy of a dip? Well we pigs always say, “where’s the trough? We’ll give it a try!”
Snouting Down or Chowing Down
Smelling, Licking, Eating, Devouring, rolling in (did I say that?) anything in the healthy blender trough.
The Perfect Blend
Each healthy blender pig has her own special palate preference. The perfect piggy blend is when a pig adds in just the right ratio of flavourings and seasonings for his or her particular snout. It is an individual blend unique to a specific personality. Isn’t perfection a wonderful thing? Particularly when it is dripping from a happy snout! This term is also used to describe lifestyle choices. Every pig chooses to put the pieces of their "life pie" together in a different way. A "blend" is the different interests, activities, work, family and food choices that make up a blendsational life for a healthy blender pig. "What is your perfect blend?"
Toxic Omnivore
We healthy blender pigs affectionately refer to those animals that remain skeptical about whole foods and raw, vegan and allergy-friendly foods and prefer, instead, to dip into the overly processed, refined trough that can us sensitive pigs sick.
Toxic Trough
Foods that are heavily processed, or loaded with refined sugars; hydrogenated fats and oils; wheat and dairy. These foods can make health conscious, gluten free pigs sick!
Trough
The place where blender pigs dip their hungry snouts. In the “Healthy Blender Recipe” world – this place would be gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free, and free of refined and hydrogenated fats and oils.
Trough of Heaven
Foods or Dishes that make piggy snouts sing – whole foods that taste sensational and do not burn our tails! Pigs have been known to break out into embarrassing renditions of 80’’s tunes, or perform “the blending dance of joy” in public places.
What's Your Perfect Blend?
A question I ask all of my readers. I am asking you to put your personality into these simple recipes. But in addition to that, blending isn’t just a method of food preparation for me, it’s a metaphor for how I live my life. I tend to combine different ideas and concepts, notes and flavors, and philosophies and cultures, in order to find a healthy, enjoyable balance of food, exercise, work and fun. I invite you to do the same.
Your "perfect blend" (foods, exercise, joyful activities, fulfilling work, loving relationships, time with family, etc.) will add up to a unique combination, and I would love to hear what that is. We are all learning from each other.
Wheat Weeper
This is what we call those piggies with sensitivities to gluten who constantly long for the wheat-inspired dishes that they know will make them sick.
