Raw Vegan Spiced Strawberry Ice Cream Green Smoothie

12

Piggies! Whatever you do, do NOT miss out on making this delicious raw vegan spiced strawberry green smoothie. It tastes just like melted rich strawberry ice cream. You would never guess it was dairy free, and you would never think for a moment it had green vegetables in it. Yes, this is another decadent dessert green smoothie. I don't advocate drinking these sweet green smoothies every day. But for a delicious Summer treat, you can't beat this!

This fun little concoction might just rival the pistachio ice cream kale shake as a fantastic way to get kids to eat greens. For children, and those who are not partial to spicy foods, you can omit the jalapeno pepper in the recipe. This smoothie tastes great without the heat. I just thought the spicy kick added a little somethin somethin to the party. If you want to make this smoothie nut-free, just substitute the cashews and the coconut water for 2 cups of soy milk, rice milk, or other vegan milk.

This flavour combination was actually inspired by a Vitamix recipe. They share a spiced strawberry ice cream on their website that was TO DIE FOR. It was not dairy free, and so I thought I could create something vegan that also contained greens. The results were spectacular. A perfect combination of nutrition and FUN!

Don't overlook romaine lettuce for fantastic green smoothies. It is mild tasting and one of the BEST introductory greens for green smoothie newbies because it is easily masked with other flavours. Romaine or cos lettuce is high in water content, low in calories, and an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C and folate. It contains vital minerals and phytonutrients that protect against oxidation. It is also a very good source of dietary fibre. One of the greatest things about romaine lettuce if you live in the U.S, is that most of the domestic supply comes from California, and is available all year round.

Speaking of great smoothie ingredients, there is only two days left to enter to WIN $250 worth of Sprout Living raw, vegan, gluten free products in this month's giveaway. You can also receive 10% OFF your entire Sprout Living order this month using the coupon code: theblendergirl.

But back to the joys of sipping spiced strawberry ice cream! Blend up this green smoothie and you will not be disappointed. It is dessert in a glass. Oinkedy Oink!!!

Raw Vegan Spiced Strawberry Ice Cream Green Smoothie

  • 3 ½ cups fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 2 cups chopped romaine lettuce
  • 2 cups raw coconut water or filtered water
  • 2 cups of ice (if using fresh strawberries)
  • 1/3 cup raw cashews (*see note about nut free options)
  • ¼ cup chopped pitted dates
  • 2 or 3 tsp jalapeno pepper (about ½ jalapeno) or more depending on the heat of your pepper
  • 1 tsp non alcoholic pure vanilla extract or 1/2 regular vanilla extract
  • pinch of Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt
  1. Place all the ingredients in your Vitamix and puree until smooth and creamy.
  2. Tweak flavours to taste – you might want to add dates or stevia to heighten the strawberry flavour depending on the ripeness of your fruit.
  3. Makes three 16-ounce glasses.

Piggy Cooking Tips

How To Select and Store the Best Romaine Lettuce

Romaine or Cos Lettuce has deep green, long leaves with a crisp texture and deep taste. The best Romaine lettuce should have compact heads with crisp looking, unwilted leaves that are free of dark or slimy spots, and the leaves' edges should be free of brown or yellow discolouration. Romaine lettuce should be washed and dried (a salad spinner is great) before storing in the refrigerator to remove any excess moisture. Store it in the crisper wrapped in a damp cloth or in a plastic bag. It should keep like this for about 5 - 7 days.

Thanks for this recipe! It’s full of goodness and tastes MUCH BETTER than the best dairy strawberry smoothie I’ve had in the past. Keep posting them. The girls in the office, could not believe it was non dairy!

See, THIS is why I LOVE internet, and the time change from the US and Australia. This post went up at midnight our time and while I slept, somebody across the other side of the world is making this recipe FIRST! SO glad you liked it. I know….you would NEVER guess it was dairy free.
Thanks!!!

Not quite brave enough to try it with the pepper but the recipe without it, is for me - delicious.  I’m now going to try all your other smoothie creations they all sound so YUM I don’t know where to start.

Yes, this smoothie is delicious without the pepper. But you might be pleasantly surprised at the incredible balance of flavours with it! Start with the pistachio kale smoothie and the banana coconut cream pie smoothies. WOW!

Just tried this one this afternoon with radish greens (because they were beautiful and I wanted to eat them in something that wouldn’t require cooking them) and it’s really good. It’s surprising to me how bold the strawberry flavor is and how well it goes with that little bit of heat from the jalapeno.
