Raw Vegan Spicy Orange Cranberry Mousse

16

Piggies, I shared this delicious raw vegan orange cranberry mousse as part of my blender-inspired series for Recipe Relay last week, and I thought it only fair that I share it here.  I love home made cranberry sauce with the delicious blend of sweet and spicy! Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg just scream autumn to me, and I feel warm and comforted. I was craving those flavours the other day, so I had the idea of creating a super quick and easy spiced cranberry mousse that I could serve at holiday dinners.

I have a penchant for quick blender mousses using avocado as the base. “God’s butter” never lets me down and serves as a wonderful blank canvas for inspiration. After blending and tasting this mousse for over half an hour and devouring half of the blender carriage in my quest to perfect the blend, I had lost all perspective. I called in reinforcements, aka “friend, neighbour, fellow vegetarian, “tart at heart kindred spirit”, and chef extraordinaire Stacey”, who helped me balance out the flavours. Luckily we kept looking at each other and saying the same things, “more orange juice, a little more sweetener, a pinch of nutmeg”. On the final round of tweaks we each took our trusty spoons to the blender carriage, and it really was like goldilocks and the three little bears as we closed our eyes with beaming pride deciding it was, “Juuuust right!”

Once again, tweak to taste and find the blend that is right for you. What I really like about this autumn mousse is the warm comforting tones and the balance between the sweet and the spicy. The complexity of the flavours doesn’t really hit you until the back end. You might want to hold back on some of the juice if you want to make it even more interesting. We sweetened it so that it would taste more like a dessert. But I like it either way.

My favourite way to serve this raw vegan pudding is straight out of the Vitamix carriage where it has been warmed slightly by the friction heat of the blades. I usually top it with some raw vegan cashew cream, dried cranberries and orange zest. But it is also delicious chilled as well. Trust me, this orange cranberry mousse is so delicious, you will be blending up again and again for those last minute holiday guests. YUMMO!

Raw Vegan Spicy Orange Cranberry Mousse

  • 2 cup fresh cranberries
  • 2 large avocados
  • 1/2 cup chopped pitted dates or more to taste
  • 1 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 cup filtered water
  • 3 tsp freshly grated orange zest (about 1 orange)
  • 2 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • 4 tsp raw agave nectar (optional)
  • 1 tsp alcohol free vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • pinch of ground nutmeg
  • pinch of Celtic sea salt
  • Garnish:
  • raw vegan cashew cream
  • orange zest
  • ground cinnamon
  • dried or fresh cranberries
  1. Blend all ingredients and serve immediately warm out of the blender and serve with raw vegan vanilla cashew cream, orange zest, a dash of cinnamon and dried or fresh cranberries.
  2. You can also chill this in the fridge for a few hours and serve cold.

Piggy Cooking Tips

the best way to clean your blender

After blending up something sticky, gooey or smelly, just place a few drops of soap in the carriage with some warm water and blend on high until all of the congealed food slips away from the blades and sides. Then repeat this process. Then rinse with water and presto! Clean carriage.
If you have smells or stains repeat this process with some bicarbonate of soda or lemon juice and water.
Check out the video on A No Hassle Way To Clean Your Blender that I did as part of the Chow Tips Series.

I love the fact that Tess uses avocados as the “butter” base.  The texture of that alone is creamy and delectable for the mouth.  Adding the ginger and nutmeg also give a little kick to it and as she says “a fall feeling”.  Those spices always smell delightful as well as taste wonderful. Let this cranberry mousse be the first for your palate this Thanksgiving!! It could be a sensational side as part of your meal that will trigger joy in the faces of your guests!!

This is a gorgeous recipe! I’m one of those folks with a love/hate relationship when it comes to cooking or un-cooking, nothing with more than 3 steps max and this is perfect! I’m going to make this for my Winter Solstice/Yule feast! You’re a marvel miss Tess ;)

I love cranberries and this recipe makes them the star!  There is just right amount of heat, sweet and tart.  I liked eating it while it’s still a little warm from the blender.  It is the holidays personified but amazing enough to eat year round for sure!

Can I make this in a food processor?  My regular blender died and I am saving up to get a vitamix. :)

Katie
I haven’t tried to make this in a food processor.
The taste would be the same, but you wouldn’t get the silky smooth consistency you can get with a high speed blender.
However, I just got Breville Sous Chef food processor and that thing is AMAZING.
So give it a go!
Please let me know what the results are like.
