If you think juicing kale can't taste good, The Holy Kale Kleanse Juice will change your mind. I asked my wonderful friend, Lauren Felts from The Holy Kale to contriubute a raw juice recipe this month, and she delivered in spectacular fashion. This healthy cleansing green juice ROCKS! All of Lauren's recipes are wonderful. 

Some of you may remember Lauren and her Raw Vegan Burgers with Tomato Caprese Salad that she shared as part of "Raw Food Recipes with Excalibur."  I ADORE this woman. She is SO cool. We had a blast hanging together recently at the Essentials of Raw Food Cuisine Weekend Intensive at Matthew Kenney Culinary in Santa Monica. She made me a delectable, refreshing kale juice for me that day, and I have been a huge fan of her juice recipes ever since. 

This lovely lady is on a quest for "The Holy Kale." Don't you just LOVE that name? To say Lauren is a kale aficionado is an understatement. If you love kale, or want to learn how to incorporate it into delicious raw, vegan, and vegetarian recipes, this is the site for you!

She has explained each ingredient for us:

Lemon – stimulates bile, therefore pushing toxins out of the liver for full clearance. In addition, they contain limonoids, which have been shown to help fight cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon.

Pineapple – containing the specialized enzyme bromelain, which is a protease enzyme, these guys have an anti-inflammatory effect, and have also shown to clear up pathogenic material in the body.

Ginger – renown for its intestinal benefits, ginger is the go-to for reducing gas, relieving nausea, eliminating motion sickness, while relaxing and soothing the intestinal tract.

Apple – although a sweet fruit, apples contain phytonutrients that regulate blood sugar, making them an ideal addition to any juice. In addition, they contain pre-biotics, which feed the healing bacteria in the large intestines.

Apple Cider Vinegar – while long used as a folk remedy, apple cider vinegar seems to actually live up to the hype. Improving diabetes and cholesterol levels and aiding in weight loss, just an ounce a day is an excellent addition to your juices. 

Mint – an obvious addition for its flavor and its tummy-soothing benefits, the essential oils found in mint also stops the growth of many different bacteria and fungus.

Unheated Sea Salt – salt is an essential for all cleansing drinks because it contains a wide range of minerals needed by the body to move toxins, especially in the lymph. In addition, unheated sea salt is needed for hcl (hydrochloric acid) production in the stomach, our natural disinfectant.

“The Holy Kale Kleanse” Juice

  • 1 meyer lemon, peeled
  • ½ cup chopped pineapple
  • 1 bunch kale
  • 1 bunch continental parsley
  • ½ cucumber
  • 2 inch knob of ginger
  • 1 ½ apples
  • 2 oz. apple cider vinegar
  • 1/8 tsp Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt (stirred through at the end)
  • 21 g fresh mint
  1. Process all ingredients through your juicer (I use an Omega) except the salt. Stir that through at the end. 
  2. Serves 1 - 2. 
  3. Consume strained or unstrained. Whatever your preference.

how to select and store kale

To select the best tasting kale with the highest nutritional density look for varieties that have bright rich coloured leaves that are firm and energetic. The stems should be moist and crisp. Buy organic wherever possible and avoid leaves that are wilted, discoloured, bruised or have holes. Kale is very delicate and will become yellow, bitter, and lose much of its nutritional properties very quickly if not stored correctly. Do not wash the kale, but rather, enclose it in a plastic bag taking out as much of the air as possible. Then store in a cold fridge for up to five days. The Tupperware vegetable storers with the “breathers” are phenomenal for storing kale! For all of you fellow “tupper-tarts” out there – you know what I am talking about!
