Desserts & Puddings

My motto every time I am in Paris? “A crepe a day keeps snout happy and gay” I have to admit, every time I am there, I find it very hard to resist sneaking into a creperie to partake of my secret guilty pleasure (which is not so secret any more). I mean people make culinary pilgrimages for the food! It is THE street food in Paris. And as they say, “When in Rome”. Well…you get my drift. I just can’t pass 100 people on the street with their snouts smeared with Nutella and banana and not stick mine in the trough that makes everybody else so happy? In the gluten free world, there is always the question: "What are you willing to endure a stomach ache for?" For my friend Jad, it is a really good croissant. For me, it will always be my beloved... OK, so here I go again! Yapping on again about my love of avocados! If you really hate avocados, then you might want to read another recipe blog. Because I am not going to stop! When we had people over for our taco buffet feast the other night, I whipped up this raw avocado pudding for dessert, with the left over avocados that were going to be past their peak in the morning! The results were pretty good. Well, there certainly wasn’t anything left in the trough. So I am guessing it was OK. My inspiration for this vegan avocado mousse was this famous raw avocado pudding in a macrobiotic restaurant I frequented on when I was touring with a show in Portugal many years ago. That raw avocado pudding still calls out to me in my sleep. Dear... Keep Reading

Merry Christmas! My mum’s side of the family get together every second year for a Christmas fiesta that we all look forward to, till the minute we are all driving away in tears as we part company until the next reunion! Rob calls it “Animal House For Adults”. It is just a huge party with incredible home cooked food; way too much alcohol; hilarious games and memories; and most importantly, a whole ton of love! As we all like to say, “There is NOTHING like a Fisher family Christmas”. I yearn for those four days for two whole years! And so does everyone else. Last year we made a culinary family tree cookbook, complete with all of our favourite family recipes, photos and stories from the last 40 years. I had so much fun making it, and it is... I don’t know anyone out there that doesn’t enjoy a great piece of gluten free chocolate hazelnut cake. But as all self-respecting chocoholics know, not all flourless chocolate hazelnut cakes were created equal -- in sugar and fat content, as well as taste. Now some of you fellow chocoholics might be willing to drown your snout in the toxic trough in order to feed your addiction. I, on the other hand, like to feed my gluten free chocolate hazelnut cake addiction without getting sick. This flowerless chocolate hazelnut cake strikes a healthy balance, and doesn’t put a kink in your gut! This gluten free chocolate cake is not the richest or most decadent on offer. But that is what I love about it. It is not too rich, or too sweet, and you can... Keep Reading

The combination of raw fruit and nuts never gets old for me. Throw in some berries and vegan cream for good measure, and you have a match made in piggy heaven, and a raw nutritional powerhouse. I almost didn’t include this raw vegan breakfast recipe, as I thought it was too easy and obvious, required no skill, and not really a recipe. But then I thought, "that is the whole point of this recipe blog!" So here it is. On of my favourite raw food breakfast recipes. My raw vegan breakfast parfait that was featured in one of my vegan Chow Tips. I am sure many of you have made similar things with granola and yoghurt. This gluten free dairy free vegan version is another reminder of how good the simple things can be; and a perfect example of how... Keep Reading

It just doesn’t get much easier than this delicious vegan mousse. This berry tofu pudding can be prepared in less than 10 minutes (and that includes getting the ingredients out of your fridge), and is absolutely delicious. I got this fantastic vegan mousse recipe from my friend Alison about 10 years ago, and my snout has paid homage to her fabulous tofu berry pudding trough countless times since. This refreshing vegan mousse makes a fantastic, quick last-minute dessert; simple healthy after school snack; or guilt-free vegan sweet treat on a hot Summer’s day. Either way it is Soy Berry Good! You can make this vegan mousse even quicker and easier by just blending in frozen berries and serving immediately. But I find that reducing the berries... If you have been searching for the easiest gluten free fruit cake recipe on the planet – search no longer. I have found it! I clipped this recipe from a magazine about 10 years ago, and stupidly never made it. But fate intervened, championing this quick fruit cake recipe’s potential, as it fell out of my ancient recipe file while I was desperately searching for my grandmother’s cinnamon smoothie milk shake recipe. I almost hurriedly threw this quick fruit cake recipe away, only to discover, as I gave it a quick glance, that I just might hold the golden gluten free fruit cake ticket. Well, for those of us with no time! I am not going to mislead all of you fruit cake aficionados. This is not the most moist, flavour-filled fruit cake in the... Keep Reading

There is nothing more refreshing on a stinking hot Summer’s day than a fresh lemon granita or sorbet. It was a scorcher of a day last week and and I couldn’t help wishing I was back in Italy dipping my spoon into a zesty home made lemon granita overlooking the crystal clear blue water of Positano. Oh My! That brings back memories of what would have to be one of the most memorable holidays of my life.  I had just finished touring with a theatre show in Europe, and decided to spend a few lazy months exploring Italy on my way home. I should mention that this sadly marked the end of my strict Macrobiotic ways! I have always been a firm believer that the best way to immerse yourself in a culture is to live like a local, have a go at speaking... Keep Reading

Hello, my name is Tess, and I am a chocoholic. Well, I am a 70% Cocoa Organic Fairtrade Chocoholic. My sister Kara, has a saying, “A chocolate a day keeps the grouchies away”. That always makes me laugh. However, as we women well know -- too many spoons on the chocolate lips puts inches on the hips. Some time ago I suggested she switch her daily indulgence to dark chocolate so she could still enjoy the “mental health benefits” with less fat and sugar. She struggled at first, but embraced the dark side, and now, like me, only eats the good stuff. We soon converted her husband Leigh, and now, chocoholics far and wide are dancing to our weekly meetings. We’re looking into renting a bigger church hall! However, switching to the dark bars is...
