Piggies! I am continuing with my cranberry orgy and posting my favourite raw vegan Body Ecology cranberry smoothie in honour of the release of Donna Gate’s new book, “The Baby Boomer Diet” and the companion DVD series, “Growing Younger: Anti-Aging Secrets For every Generation”. Those of you who have been following me for a while would be familiar with how The Body Ecology Diet changed my life. I had suffered lethargy and candida my whole life, and after having tried every whole foods diet known to man, I started on Body Ecology stage one and never looked back. Donna had successfully cherry picked many of the same elements from what she calls “the pillars of holistic health” as I had. It wasn’t until I put them together in the way that she... Keep Reading
Piggies! It is cranberry season and I could not be happier! I admit to having performed my signature piggy dance of joy with reckless abandon in the middle of the farmer's market on the weekend whilst salivating over all of the plump delicious fresh cranberries on offer. My snout was wet, my tail was wiggling, and the "tart at heart" in me was rejoicing as I contemplated "death by excessive cranberry consumption." Just call me the scarlet lady! What can I say, those plump glossy tart little berries were just begging to be exploited! So, I snatched a few bags and was inspired to create some delectable cranberry dishes for my contribution to the holiday issue of Raw Super Life Magazine. I decided right then and there to celebrate "all... Keep Reading
This is one of my favourite times of the year. Those of you who who have been following me for a while know my penchant for vegan soups! Check out some of my past favourites, my vegan cream of spinach soup, vegan roasted sweet potato soup, vegan coconut lentil and pumpkin soup, vegan mint pea soup, and the delicious vegan garlic potato soup. Today I add to these delectable offerings and share my creamy vegan roasted butternut squash soup. YUMMO! I love heading up to the local market and seeing pumpkins, acorn squash, and my beloved butternut squash! The gorgeous oranges and yellows of the squashes just sing out to be exploited. I bought some local onions, carrots, ginger and cilantro, and I had everything I needed for my simple Winter... Keep Reading
Those of you who have tasted my vegan pumpkin pie smoothie, vegan pecan pie smoothie, and the vegan apple pie smoothie that I made for my series of blender-inspired videos for Chow would be familiar with my love affair with vegan "pie in a glass" smoothies. I LOVE vegetable and fruit pies. But on the days when I am not inclined to bake (which is most days!) I turn to my trusty blender for inspiration and whip up a vegan pie smoothie to satisfy my craving for a decadent piece of pie without the need to coat-check my colon! Today I cast the fabulous sweet potato as the star attraction in my pie smoothie love fest! Sweet potatoes are soft, fibrous vegetables that are sweet and decadent, and are high in beta-carotene which boosts immune... Keep Reading
I had the most inspiring day attending the second annual Women Of The Green Generation at the incredible Marrakesh House in Culver City. I was so excited to meet so many green women I have admired for such a long time -- leaders in the green movement, who I had previously only connected with in the virtual world on Twitter and Facebook, after having read their books, blogs and websites, tuned into their TV shows, radio programs and podcasts, or by using their products. There is something electric about the energy of a group of environmentally concious, intelligent, motivated, mindful, compassionate women with a common goal. I walked away feeling so optimistic -- as if anything was possible. To read more about my inspiring day head to my... Keep Reading
I am having an absolute blast with my gorgeous family! They arrived from Australia a week ago and we have been flying the piggy flag with gusto, exploring the snout-worthy culinary delights of Los Angeles. In my humble opinion, no whole foodie tour of L.A would be complete without a visit to Real Food Daily. I was so proud as my ever-supportive family, who are not vegetarians, but rather "whole foods/slow foods geeks," dove into their vegan troughs with over-zealous piggy enthusiasm and joy. Ann Gentry's delectable vegan recipes continue to inspire and delight me, and I was thrilled that my foodie family agreed. The food is so simple and clean. My sister Kara was hilarious: she closed her eyes as she cleaned every last morsel off her... Keep Reading
It seems only fitting that the last of my gluten free Christmas recipes be a homage to my late grandfather, Frank; who could proudly polish off a dozen fruit mince pies in one sitting. We always wondered in amazement, how anyone could stomach that many? We also needed to isolate him to read his newspaper the next day, when all of that fruit mince was making its departure, starting with a series of unending lethal farts that contained enough gas to levitate a hot-air-balloon. Sufficed to say, grandpa spent a great part of Boxing Day on the toilet. But, when teased about it, he smugly claimed that "it was the sweetest way to clean out for the new year"! For those of you who are not familiar with fruit mince pies, they are part of the... Keep Reading
I have to say, that when it comes to shortbread, my mum's recipe takes the blue ribbon prize every day of the week and twice on Sundays. I have been happily scoffing these delicious little morsels of Heaven every Christmas since I can remember. It is one of my "I will endure a wheat-induced stomach-ache" treats that has me coat-checking my colon, paying homage to the toilet bowl, and still returning for more. Suffice to say, it is absolutely scrumptious; and no "Fisher Family Christmas Extravaganza" would be complete without a quadruple batch on offer. Actually, all of my aunties bring their shortbread blends in tupperware containers for the main event, and they are all pretty spectacular. But, let's be honest, (and not to take anything... No "Fisher Family Christmas" would be complete without my mum's "I will sell my soul for the last spoonful" brandy cream. We proudly consider it a team effort on Christmas eve when she makes up a quadruple batch for the hungry snouts sniffing around in the kitchen for the first taste of Christmas heaven. Everyone has to have a spoonful (or two or three!) to approve the quantities of brandy and sugar, and to ensure that the blend is "Fisher snout-worthy". Our motto? "You can never have too much brandy"! My uncle John always gets the last say, having officially proclaimed himself as the ultimate "Ann brandy cream afficionado", after being sprung one-too-many times over the decades with guilty snout in fridge and finger in jug licking out the...
