Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie

Those of you who have tasted my pumpkin pie smoothie, pecan pie smoothie, and the apple pie smoothie would be familiar with my love affair with vegan "pie in a glass" smoothies. I love pie. But on the days when I'm not inclined to bake (which is most days!) I turn to my trusty blender for inspiration and whip up a pie smoothie to satisfy my craving for a decadent piece of pie without the need to coat-check my colon!

Today I cast the fabulous sweet potato as the star attraction in my pie smoothie love fest!  Sweet potatoes are soft, fibrous vegetables that are sweet and decadent, and are high in beta-carotene which boosts immune defenses and may protect DNA in cells from cancer-causing chemicals. They are quite high in sugar, so I don't indulge in them all that often. However, due to their supposed anti-cancer properties I decided to use them to create a really decadent sweet smoothie amongst my anti-cancer smoothies for The Thrive Alive Foundation in Canada.

This sweet potato smoothie hits the spot for me, and I hope it will for you too. I will attach a disclaimer right here and say that this smoothie is very rich! A little goes a long way for me. I always share it with a friend, but my mother could happily devour the entire blender full in one sitting. See how you go! This smoothie is fantastic if you feel like something decadent during your healthy eating regime. It tastes like a treat without being too naughty.

I like to use orange sweet potatoes or yams to get a really nice depth of flavour in this drink. The maple syrup adds to the mixture beautifully, and the spices round out the flavours nicely. You could always add a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to make this smoothie more affordable if you don’t want to purchase each individual spice. Similarly, you could use soy milk for people with nut allergies, or rice milk to accomodate multiple food allergies.

Either way, this smoothie is divine. Try drinking your piece of pie and you won't be sorry!

Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie

  • 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk or rice milk
  • 1 1/2 cups mashed cooked orange sweet potato
  • 1 medium frozen sliced banana
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon natural vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon flax oil (optional)
  • pinch Celtic sea salt
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  1. Throw all of the ingredients into your blender and blast on high for 30 to 60 seconds, until smooth and creamy.

Makes two 16-ounce glasses.

Tip: the best way to clean your blender

After blending up something sticky, gooey or smelly, just place a few drops of soap in the carriage with some warm water and blend on high until all of the congealed food slips away from the blades and sides. Then repeat this process. Then rinse with water and presto! Clean carriage.
If you have smells or stains repeat this process with some bicarbonate of soda or lemon juice and water.

Pretty Picture…looks Nyum !!

Had this today! Was AMAZING. Haven’t had a pie like dessert since I became a vegan :)

Hey Piggy Ana,
SO glad you loved this smoothie. Thanks!
Give the pecan pie and apple pie smoothies a go.
They are SCRUMPTIOUS too. Yummo!

Made a batch of this today..  I hardly got Any !  The kids Loved it and gobbled it down.  Might make another batch after they go to bed.  Wondering - would a bit of Rum be a good addition ?

Hey Dr Steve! LOL! I love that story.
Oh….rum…go for it!

Thick smoothies made with pumpkins and sweet potatoes are awesome garnished with glass straws from - 12mm diameter is best and length to fit your glassware.

Hey Cheryl,
I LOVE glass straws.
Thanks for sharing :)

I;m gonna make it thicker and use it as a pudding.

Hey Sue!
Thanks for sharing your idea.
This would make a delicious pudding!
Let me know how you go :)

Such a comforting smoothie on a rainy fall day after coming in from walking Oscar. Think I’ll add a bit more cinnamon next time.  ;-)

So happy you gave this a go Marie-Guy.
You are AMAZING!

The idea of sweet potato in a smoothie total freaked me out at first but then I tried this and it is TO DIE FOR!!!!!!!! Was so surprised! Best autumn treat ever - YUM!

Glad you gave it a try!
I LOVE this smoothie and glad you did too :)

Yum, yum, yum!

I was a sceptic about this one, but after reading your blog and comments, I dared try it and of course, it was a real delight ! Thanks Blender Girl. Yum :)

Oh my god! I never would have used sweet potato like this before I read your blog. It is hard to decide each day which smoothie to have now. This one is definitely a family favourite- even for my sceptical husband!

LOL! Love it! Glad you gave it a go and it was a hit!

Thanks Katy, K, Claudia, Caitlin and Marie.
I really LOVE this smoothie and I am glad you do too. Oink Oink :)

Delicious Healthier Twist on Sweet Potato Smoothie:  I can’t have sugar or sweet fruits, so my smoothie included a Garnet Yam, 1/2 large ripe Haas Avocado instead of the Banana, and about 25 drops English Toffee Stevia instead of the Maple Syrup. YUMMY!

Now if I could only convince my husband that it is actually a Pumpkin Blizzard from DQ!  Oink!

LOL Jan!
I LOVE your blend. I just tried it and it is DEELISH
Thanks for sharing it with everyone.
Let’s keep working on converting hubby :)

WOW! This smoothie really does taste like a sweet potato pie….and not a vegan one at that! This is going to be staple treat in our house.

Thanks for trying another one!

I made this smoothie last night and OMG…delicious!!!  I can’t wait to make it again!  It was seriously a dessert in a cup!  I’m in the process of losing weight (20 lbs gone so far!) and this was a great, healthy (only 308 calories) dinner and dessert in one!  Loved it!!  I can’t wait to make it again!

So glad you enjoyed this Carren.
That is an AMAZING weight-loss achievement. SO happy for you and so lovely to have you here.

This smoothie was so scrumptious!  I saved the extra in the freezer and had another yummy treat the next day.  This recipe is going on my vita-mix playlist!! Thanks for the great recipes!

An absolute pleasure!
LOVE freezing it for a quick snack later.
I would LOVE to know what else is on your Vitamix Playlist! YUM!!!!

Oh my. Looks so good! Now I want to try sweet potato in a smoothie!

Can’t wait to hear what you think Charissa :)

I just tried this ( made without banana because I didn’t have one and used coconiut milk). Still, yummy! Thank you for the recipe!

Wonderful! Thanks for taking the time to share you blend. Sounds DELICIOUS!

Ohmygosh!!! This was AMAZING!  I’ve never tasted anything like this before.  I used Stevia instead of the maple syrup because my grandma has diabetes. Now I make a big batch for her every few days and I’ll freeze it and make it like an ice cream! She’s so happy now that she can get a healthy fix!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :D

Oh, thankyou Manddaa for taking the time to share your experience. I am SO pleased you are enjoying this shake.
Isn’t stevia AMAZING?!

Hey sweet girl, I made an orange sweet potato smoothie this week and linked to this one.  Yours sounds so decadently delicious that I wanted to share it with my readers too!

Oh YUMMO!!!!!
Thanks for sharing Heather!
I know what I am making this weekend!!!

This was delicious!! It was funny cuz I had just baked up a sweet potato when I remembered this recipe. I had just enough to make it. Woohoo!!
All I did different is add a little raw honey (to sweeten it extra) and extra cinnamon. Oh, and a little extra pumpkin pie spice (I like suuuuper flavorful smoothies)
Hey, I bet this would make a fantastic raw sweet

Hey Natalyn!
Glad you enjoyed this.
Yes! You can thicken this with chia seeds and it makes a fantastic pudding.
Love your little tweaks too. YUM :)

I was wondering if anyone has used this sweet potato smoothie as a post workout drink?

Dina, I do have some readers who have emailed and said they have added in some vegan protein powder like VEGA or SPROUT LIVING and used this after workouts. Perhaps reduce the sugar content and use stevia instead?

If it is in a can, is the sweet potato already cooked?

I don’t used sweet potato in a can, I steam sweet potato to cook it, and then mash it fresh. In any case, yes, the sweet potato is cooked. I find raw cooked potato is too starchy in a smoothie, and doesn’t give you the same depth of flavor in this smoothie. I hope this helps.

Thank you, it does help!  I appreciate it!
