Vegan Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie

41

Those of you who have tasted my vegan pumpkin pie smoothie, vegan pecan pie smoothie, and the vegan apple pie smoothie that I made for my series of blender-inspired videos for Chow would be familiar with my love affair with vegan "pie in a glass" smoothies. I LOVE vegetable and fruit pies. But on the days when I am not inclined to bake (which is most days!) I turn to my trusty blender for inspiration and whip up a vegan pie smoothie to satisfy my craving for a decadent piece of pie without the need to coat-check my colon!

Today I cast the fabulous sweet potato as the star attraction in my pie smoothie love fest!  Sweet potatoes are soft, fibrous vegetables that are sweet and decadent, and are high in beta-carotene which boosts immune defenses and may protect DNA in cells from cancer-causing chemicals. They are quite high in sugar, so I don't indulge in them all that often. However, due to their supposed anti-cancer properties I decided to use them to create a really decadent sweet smoothie amongst my anti-cancer smoothies for The Thrive Alive Foundation in Canada.

This vegan sweet potato smoothie hits the spot for me, and I hope it will for you too. I will attach a disclaimer right here and say that this sweet potato smoothie is very rich! A little goes a long way for me. I always share it with a friend, but my mother could happily devour the entire blender full in one sitting. See how you go!
This vegan sweet potato smoothie is fantastic if you feel like something decadent during your healthy eating regime. It tastes like a treat without being too naughty.

I like to use orange sweet potatoes or yams to get a really nice depth of flavour in this vegan smoothie. The maple syrup adds to the mixture beautifully, and the spices round out the flavours nicely. You could always add a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to make this vegan sweet potato smoothie more affordable if you don’t want to purchase each individual spice. Similarly, you could use soy milk for people with nut allergies, or rice milk to accomodate multiple food allergies.

Either way, this vegan sweet potato pie smoothie is divine! It is vegan, gluten free, dairy free, egg free, and can be made nut free and soy free. Try drinking your piece of pie and you won't be sorry! YUMMO!

Vegan Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie

  • 1 ½ cups mashed cooked orange sweet potato or yams
  • 2 cups almond milk OR rice milk or soy free for soy and nut allergies
  • ½ cup ice
  • 1 fresh or frozen banana
  • 3  or 4 Tbsp maple syrup depending on your taste preference
  • 1 tsp natural alcohol free vanilla extract or 1/2 tsp regular extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • pinch Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt
  1. Throw all the ingredients in your blender (I use a Vitamix) and puree until smooth and creamy.
  2. Serves 2.

Piggy Cooking Tips

the best way to clean your blender

After blending up something sticky, gooey or smelly, just place a few drops of soap in the carriage with some warm water and blend on high until all of the congealed food slips away from the blades and sides. Then repeat this process. Then rinse with water and presto! Clean carriage.
If you have smells or stains repeat this process with some bicarbonate of soda or lemon juice and water.
Check out the video on A No Hassle Way To Clean Your Blender that I did as part of the Chow Tips Series.

Thick smoothies made with pumpkins and sweet potatoes are awesome garnished with glass straws from http://glassdharma.com - 12mm diameter is best and length to fit your glassware.

Such a comforting smoothie on a rainy fall day after coming in from walking Oscar. Think I’ll add a bit more cinnamon next time.  ;-)

Delicious Healthier Twist on Sweet Potato Smoothie:  I can’t have sugar or sweet fruits, so my smoothie included a Garnet Yam, 1/2 large ripe Haas Avocado instead of the Banana, and about 25 drops English Toffee Stevia instead of the Maple Syrup. YUMMY!

Now if I could only convince my husband that it is actually a Pumpkin Blizzard from DQ!  Oink!

I made this smoothie last night and OMG…delicious!!!  I can’t wait to make it again!  It was seriously a dessert in a cup!  I’m in the process of losing weight (20 lbs gone so far!) and this was a great, healthy (only 308 calories) dinner and dessert in one!  Loved it!!  I can’t wait to make it again!

Ohmygosh!!! This was AMAZING!  I’ve never tasted anything like this before.  I used Stevia instead of the maple syrup because my grandma has diabetes. Now I make a big batch for her every few days and I’ll freeze it and make it like an ice cream! She’s so happy now that she can get a healthy fix!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :D

Natalyn :) Jul 28, 2012 at 11:22am

This was delicious!! It was funny cuz I had just baked up a sweet potato when I remembered this recipe. I had just enough to make it. Woohoo!!
All I did different is add a little raw honey (to sweeten it extra) and extra cinnamon. Oh, and a little extra pumpkin pie spice (I like suuuuper flavorful smoothies)
Hey, I bet this would make a fantastic raw sweet

reply
The Blender Girl Jul 28, 2012 at 02:47pm

Hey Natalyn!
Glad you enjoyed this.
Yes! You can thicken this with chia seeds and it makes a fantastic pudding.
Love your little tweaks too. YUM :)

I was wondering if anyone has used this sweet potato smoothie as a post workout drink?

reply
The Blender Girl Nov 18, 2012 at 09:57pm

Dina, I do have some readers who have emailed and said they have added in some vegan protein powder like VEGA or SPROUT LIVING and used this after workouts. Perhaps reduce the sugar content and use stevia instead?
