I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I can't believe we're nearly at the end of 2014. This has been the biggest year of my life. It's all become a bit of a blur, really. I just dropped Scott off at the airport to head home to work. But, we had an amazing holiday together traveling around Australia visiting family and friends. I'm staying in Australia for three more weeks to spend more time with my family.

I thought I'd end this big year with a great new year's cocktail. These finger lime kamikaze shots with mint and olive oil come from the Cooking Techniques and Recipes with Olive Oil cookbook by Mary Papoulias-Platis from California Greek Girl and Laura Bashar from Family Spice.

I learnt a lot about cooking with olive oil from reading this book. The book provides easy yet detailed techniques for poaching, braising, marinating, infusing, and baking with olive oil — everything the home cooks need to know about olive oil: from purchasing to storage to delicious recipes.The book opens with a history of olive oil and notes about olive oil production. Did you know that one liter of olive oil is produced from pressing seven liters of olives? Mary and Laura then give you the lowdown on the different varieties of olive oil, how to select and store olive oil, and how to cook with it.

Each section of the book is broken up into sections: poaching with olive oil (I love the tomatoes and onions with fresh basil, and the figs with muscato grapes), braising with olive oil (I made the fresh tomato risotto without the parmesan and the Greek-style vegetables with tomatoes), marinating with olive oil (check out the delicious Mediterranean vegetables), healthy steamed recipes enhanced with olive oil (the basmati rice with potatoes, dill, and saffron, stuffed grape leaves with brown rice, kale, and fresh herbs), baking with olive oil (cookies, cakes, bread) infusing with olive oil (I love all of the different infused olive oils), reserving with olive oil (try the oven-dried tomatoes, garlic confit), blending with olive oil (the salad dressings are delicious), roasting with olive oil (love the baby carrots), and eating raw olive oil - check out the watermelon shooters with Persian mint syrup and these finger lime kamikaze shots with mint are on the new years eve menu.

There are beautiful recipes for meat, chicken, and fish for those of you who eat meat.

Finger Lime Kamikaze Shots

Makes 4 Shots15 MINS
  1. Shake until you have combined vodka, Triple Sec, and lemonade in a cocktail shaker full of ice.
  2. Divide the drink into four shot glasses, and top each shot glass with 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil.
  3. Cut finger limes in half and gently massage and push out the round fruit inside. Top each shot glass with it. If you cannot find finger limes, squeeze half a key lime into each shot. Top each shot with a few mint herb crystals or with sugar (optional, and garnish with a bit of the minced fresh mint leaves.

*For an alcohol-free version use extra lemonade in place of the vodka and top with olive oil.
